Internet Technology and Policy: Challenges and Solutions - Apply now
The critical Internet infrastructure is no longer a dry tech-geek topic. It has drawn attention from the wider Internet community through discussions on Internet names and numbers (domain names such as .amazon, .wine), the Internet of Things (self-driving cars, drones affecting air traffic safety) and other current issues. Diplo has updated its advanced course on infrastructure to reflect current developments. Starting 18 July 2016, we offer an interactive online course focusing on technology and core infrastructure issues in the context of public policy.
This course will be of interest to technical experts who are keen to learn more about digital policy; and to policy people who wish to learn more about Internet technology. The interplay between these two communities will add value to the course interaction.
Prominent Internet experts and leading policy makers will contribute to the review and development of course materials and/or join course discussions, including Ian Peter, Louis Pouzin, Adrian Perrig, Olaf Kolkman, Richard Hill, Motazz Beloua, Avri Doria, and Tracy Hackshaw.
The 10-week course, titled Technology and Policy: Challenges and Solutions, covers the following topics:
a.. Introduction to Internet technology and policy
b.. Telecommunication infrastructure
c.. Internet protocols
d.. Domain Name System (DNS)
e.. Cloud computing and applications
f.. Encryption technology
g.. Emerging technologies
h.. Summary: Policy challenges for infrastructure
The course can be taken as a DiploFoundation certificate course (and is eligible as one of the three courses necessary for the Advanced Diploma in Internet Governance) or as a post-graduate level course accredited by the University of Malta. It also forms part of the curriculum for the DiploFoundation/University of Malta Master in Contemporary Diplomacy with an Internet governance specialisation.
Thanks to support from the government of Malta, partial scholarships are available for qualified applicants from developing countries to attend upcoming Diplo online courses. These scholarships cover 30-70% of course fees.
To learn more and apply (by 13 June) please see the course webpage.
